MDU Fibre Build Engineer

Department: Telecommunications / Fibre Delivery
Reports To: Project Manager / Fibre Supervisor
Location: ME, TN, CT, RH, DA. Area’s
Contract Type: Full-Time / Subcontract / PAYE


Purpose of the Role

To install, splice, and test fibre optic networks within Multi-Dwelling Units (MDUs), ensuring high-quality internal and external installations that meet client and regulatory standards. The MDU Fibre Engineer will deliver end-to-end fibre connectivity — from external network access points through building risers and corridors to individual premises — including structured cabling, PoE device setup, and specialist fibre containment solutions such as Easy-Bend and InvisiLight.


Key Responsibilities

  • Install internal and external fibre cabling within MDUs (risers, corridors, apartments).
  • Carry out splicing, OTDR testing, and power meter testing to confirm link integrity.
  • Install and tension catenary wire systems to support external or open-span fibre routes.
  • Install and terminate Easy-Bend and InvisiLight fibre systems in residential and commercial environments.
  • Conduct PoE (Power over Ethernet) cabling and device installations (switches, cameras, access points).
  • Fit containment, trunking, conduit, and fibre management systems to building standards.
  • Interpret and work from network schematics, floor plans, and installation drawings.
  • Perform pre-installation surveys and complete accurate as-built documentation.
  • Liaise with building management, residents, and supervisors to coordinate access and works.
  • Follow all company RAMS, NRSWA, and H&S requirements, reporting any incidents or hazards immediately.
  • Complete daily reports, test results, and photographic evidence of work completed.

Skills & Experience Required

 

Essential:

  • Proven experience in MDU or internal fibre network installations.
  • Competent in fibre splicing, power meter testing and fault-finding.
  • Experience installing PoE cabling and installation, Easy-Bend, and InvisiLight systems.
  • Understanding of fibre architectures (FTTP, PON, Splitter, ONT).
  • Ability to read and interpret fibre plans, floor layouts, and schematic drawings.
  • Full UK driving licence and flexibility to travel.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.

 

Desirable:

  • Prior experience working on Openreach, CityFibre, or Altnet networks.
  • Certificates: NRSWA Unit IPAF, Smart Awards
  • Experience installing catenary wire and external aerial cabling.
  • Familiar with PIA-compliant installations and industry fibre management systems.
