Overview
Smart City Recruiters are proud to be supporting a leading civil engineering contractor in the appointment of a Section Engineer to join their growing Highways Infrastructure division. This role is ideal for an experienced engineer who thrives in a fast‑paced environment and wants to play a key part in delivering major highways, junction improvements, structures, and associated civils works.
You will take ownership of engineering control, quality assurance, technical delivery, and coordination of works across your section of the project, ensuring safe, compliant, and efficient execution.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead engineering activities across a defined section of highways works, including earthworks, drainage, pavement construction, structures, utilities, and temporary works
- Set out works in accordance with design drawings, specifications, and project requirements
- Manage and oversee subcontractors, ensuring technical compliance and quality standards are met
- Produce and review ITPs, RAMS, quality documentation, and as‑built records
- Ensure works are delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with programme
- Coordinate with Site Engineers, Agents, Designers, and Client Representatives
- Conduct site surveys, inspections, and technical checks to maintain high standards of workmanship
- Support the development of junior engineers and promote best practice across the project
- Assist with planning, sequencing, and temporary works coordination
- Maintain accurate site records, diaries
Essential Experience
- Proven experience as a Section Engineer or strong Site Engineer ready to step up
- Background in highways, major infrastructure, or large‑scale civils projects
- Strong understanding of DMRB, Specification for Highway Works (SHW), and relevant standards
- Proficient in setting out using Total Station, GPS, and digital surveying equipment
- Experience managing subcontractors and coordinating multi‑disciplinary works
- Strong knowledge of temporary works, quality assurance, and site safety
- Ability to interpret technical drawings and resolve engineering challenges
- Experience producing ITPs, RAMS, as‑builts, and quality documentation
Desirable Experience
- Exposure to structures, bridges, retaining walls, or complex drainage systems
- Experience on National Highways schemes or local authority highways frameworks
- Familiarity with digital engineering tools (e.g., BIM, 3D models, digital QA systems)
- Experience supporting early‑stage planning, sequencing, and methodology
Qualifications & Experience Required
Essential Qualifications
- Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, or a related discipline
- OR HNC/HND in Civil Engineering with strong relevant site experience
- Valid CSCS card (Engineer or higher)
- Full UK driving licence
Desirable Qualifications
- SMSTS or SSSTS
- First Aid at Work
- Temporary Works Coordinator or Temporary Works Supervisor training
- Working towards IEng or CEng with ICE (or already chartered)
